FFXIV A Realm Reborn Impressions after finishing ARR storyline | WoW veteran plays FFXIV

I've finished FFXIV A Realm Reborn storyline and now have a more informed summary of impressions to share with you my friends, as a WoW migrant and a new player of Final Fantasy 14.

FF14 has become a new home for me, but I'm obviously still quite new to all the systems, playstyle and the other particulars of the game as a whole.

A lot of the other players migrating to FFXIV from World of Warcraft and other games at this point in time would most likely experience similar emotions to my own, which is why I've been documenting my journey in FFXIV to date and hoping that some players would find this impression sharing useful.

A Realm Reborn is old content by FFXIV standards, but I enjoyed it quite a lot, most of the time and in most places anyway. These videos are not supposed to be a form of uneducated criticism of Final Fantasy 14 as a game, but rather just a compendium of honest impressions from someone who tries to get used to the game.

The people hyping up the story are... I am not sure what they're on about. There are definitely some fantastic parts and its not terrible. Skipping cutscenes is fine you can go to inn and rewatch anything you have skipped or want to revisit.

Also you can start grinding some daily quests in ARR to get unique mounts. Look for beast tribe quests there are 4 or 5 in ARR I believe. Grind daily quests to build up reputation and unlock items to purchase. The quests should be near every grand company at each major city.. Blue + quests around level 42 I believe.

I'm sorry to say, but you ARE NOT done with ARR at all. You finished 2.0 you need the patch content from 2.1 to 2.55, it's like saying that you finished BFA just for finishing the content available at release of the expansion, no Nazjatar, no Ashara, no Nzoth etc

You and I had a very different experience in ARR. Granted the reason why is because I started my adventure during a launch of ARR. I agree, the pacing has been an issue since day 1. I have the answer why though. When ARR launched, the game didn't come with party finder nor did MSQ give enough exp to properly binge on them. From the start, the story section was broken into pieces between few sections and FATE grind and explorations. Since we only had to level to 50 back then, the pace were a lot slower. Even with improvements today, I personally believe that the pace of the game was much better during launch. It felt much more like a proper MMORPG with leveling grind in between. Now, they adjusted to streamline this process to get thru ARR quickly as possible. I can bet that people who started out in ARR launch can name the zone better than those who started out ARR today because of this issue.

Completely valid points about the bloatiness of ARR. Now for me I went through it years ago so look back on it with tinted glasses as such I try not to say things like "Not as bad as ARR" or "Get through the Grind". Because even back then I really enjoyed ARR, even the slower bits, but that is my style and my way of play.

It was like when I started playing WOW a few years ago (After FFXIV) and I had so many issues going to WOW. Character model looked weird to me, the exaggerated but disconnected jaws were distracting... etc. Its so weird and cool to see these same complaints from the other side.

Now over time I grew to appreciate WOW in the same way I had appreciated Warcraft III. And occasionally I still dip back into WOW. but ultimately FFXIV way of delivering Narrative worked for me much better.

oh you sweet innocent... you are done with 2.0 theres about a 100 MSQ quests in 2.1 till 2.55 until you reach heavensward its gonna be a grinding thing tbh.. but its gonna be a breeze starting with heavensward though

They tighten up the quest dialogs / flow quite a lot from Heavensward onward (albeit not so much in 2.1->2.55). Even the cinematics are more diverse (camera work etc.). ARR was produced under obsurd time pressures, and they never really went back to do a "polishing" pass on it (they almost immediatly started work on the expansion). You're not going to lose all the long talky bits, that's just part of the game, but they stop putting long cutscenes in raids / missions. ARR revamp was really just a massive cull of filler quests, so most older players will have levelled the long way, so think slightly worse of it than it is now. They absolutely should put time into refining this, as it probably knocks out 30%+ of new players.

You can build mouse over macros, although the F1-8 key targetting is plenty fast and can still use queueing. Many of the healer abilities (albeit probably not at 50) are off the GCD so don't suffer at all from being macro'd. It's slightly less obvious at lower levels, but healers are dps with a side job in ffxiv not full time healers like in WoW. The most relevant abilities aren't even targetted. Of course the healer dps "cycles" are eye bleedingly boring but at least as WHM you have the perfectly balanced spammable AoE 4.5 second stun (albeit with diminishing returns) in Holy :), Astrologian is much more involved and less like healers in other games, worth checking out when you get there (and starts higher level).

Instance / levelling healing is so alien from the high end raid healing, macroing everything to mouse over (which costs around ~18% perfect throughput) should barely even be noticable, and if it means you're happier, just do it.

You might be jumping into a couple of conclusions out of context there. Flying was introduced in Heavensward, and flying in the old continent was introduced in recent shadowbringers late patches. It feels like there´s nothing to flying because right now you're flying in areas where it wasn't designed for.
I don't mean that your perception is wrong, its just that your rationale behind some things lacks context.

Thanks as usual for your honest take on rhe game. Agree with you on the difficulty of using the world map and overly verbose language choice that might turn new players away.

You do still have the patch quests from 2.1 - 2.55 to finish up A Realm Reborn, which are *not* trivial and contain quite a bit of story.

Highly recommend doing Coils of Bahamut before going into Heavensward

It also gives you access to endgame content for A Realm Reborn, such as Hard, Extreme modes of earlier dungeons and trials which differ from the what you have already done in the game.

One final suggestion is to also try out a DPS class as well as a TANK so you can see how the roles differ and interact.

FYI, we got flying in 5.3 believe along with the ARR squish so this us a recent phenomenon.
