1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1 428 CJ/SCJ - Ridiculously Underrated

For the 1969 model year, Ford really upped the ante when it came to performance per dollar. The new 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1 equipped with the 428 Cobra Jet (CJ) V8 or 428 Super Cobra Jet (SCJ) V8 had a purchase price an average buyer could afford yet had fantastic performance that was the envy of most muscle car owners.

According to a dyno engineer that worked at Ford during the late 60s and early 70s the 428 Cobra Jet put out an actual 428 horsepower on the dyno. So the 428 CJ was grossly underrated.
I worked at a Ford dealer in 69. And I remember first time transporter pulled in with 6 brand new Mach 1s everybody came out of the showroom and their jaws just dropped to the ground those cars were beautiful compared to the 68. The 69 70 Mustangs are cars that look fast even sitting still.

I learned how to drive this car, was a super low miles car I got from a guy who rarely drove it, was my dream car, he had put 12" Mickey Thompson 50's on the rear and air shocks, it was crazy fast car. The guy I sold it to wrapped it around a tree, you had to be light on the throttle, that thing would slide all day long, I had the SCJ version... monster! Mine was green with the shaker, loved that option.

People do not understand that back then, the power house engines from each maker were Ford: 427 MR/HR, Chevy 427 LS-72/ZL-1, and Mopar 426 Hemi. These engines, in their blue-printed form were their best offerings (mid-sixties), using stronger components, improved engineering, much better than the street engines such as Ford 428 various forms, Chevy's 396/455 LS-6, and Mopar 440-6 R/T. The reason of "426~427" being the limit of the race capable engines was the NASCAR limit of 7 liters (~427.166 CID); the 429 was "squeezed" in there at one point with some inventive calculations...
Understand also that the big three's race engines could not be assembled on the regular UAW assembly line, they were usually outsourced for assembly and balancing by specialty shops such as Kar Kraft, Bud Moore, Holman-Moody, OJ Smith, ... for Ford (give me a break for seniority here, I has been a long time).
Again, our (Ford) marketing studies showed that the AVERAGE American buyer (i.e. 80~90%) did not know what they were buying and were more influenced by "feeling" and "look" i.e. stripes, chrome, fake scoop, wings, spoilers, red/white walls, and engine size (not engine power/torque curves)! So, in their mind 440 was better than 426 (cheaper too), 428 had to be better than 427, etc. Those were crazy and exciting years but the writing was on the wall, liability, lawsuits, and insurance (companies) were killing us. my brother had a Mach one 428 with a Shaker and slats in the back window! sold it for 400 bucks in 75!!
