Overhitting is one of the most common mistakes players make against the dreaded "pusher". In today's lesson Brady discusses how you can still play aggressively without overhitting.

I play at a club where we are literally encouraged to be pushers. It's really annoying because I want to be a shot maker. I love the feeling of hitting with power and spin, but in a club with some expert pushers, I'm always trying to find a way to make it fun. The problem I have is they will push for a while, but if you bring your pace down the pushers will start getting aggressive and putting away shots. If I try going big, well, you know. It's just quite jarring trying to play against someone who seems to want to frustrate you. Hit too big, miss. Try to push, you get blown away, and also while they are pushing they might just randomly hit a big shot for no reason. And the slicing. Oh my gosh. So really my problem isn't just beating a pusher, it's not getting bored or annoyed. All I really want to do is play some good tennis, but pushers seem to be fine with just getting a boring 2 hour long win :p

  Me or the other guy? Trust me I want to become better. It's just frustrating playing against people who seem content to sit and lob you for half an hour. Not much fun, I would much rather play against someone who drives me to become stronger and smarter 😛

  For sure. But imagine how much fun it must be to go beyond what just feels good, to really excel and drive yourself. That's what makes the pros so fascinating to me, they have literally ascended through hard work and determination!

  This week I'm trying to give quick fixes on how to defeat the pusher, but looking at the big picture pushers don't really exist above a 4.0 level. Elevating your game will ultimately put the pusher to bed. Don't get too frustrated and with time the pusher will become less and less of a problem. Believe it or not you might look forward to playing one (I know I do!).

  I think that's your problem right there. If I played you, I would definitely push against you because you'll have no fun and get frustrated. Easy win for me. You have to appreciate the opportunity to face pushers and not get frustrated by them.

Pushers rule the junior tennis for a while but later on they become extinct.

You gotta get into the net to beat a pusher. If nothing else, it ends the point quicker which favors the non-pusher overall and it puts pressure on them to hit winners which is something they avoid most of the time.

  Agree. Getting to the net is ideal but you still have to pick your spots and not just blindly rush in. I think how you approach against a pusher can be different as well. More on this later in the week...thanks Thomas!

  I should elaborate. I think that being able to take control of the point on a neutral ball is key. You don't have to go for the line or blast it as hard as you can, but anything that can be hit should be hit. I like to get the opponent moving to setup the open court and hopefully a charge to the net. Once you see him change to a continental grip to slice one back into play, that's when you need to come in.

Brady, thanks for making it clearer! One advice please, how can I beat one of this old players that plays with super low tension, short swings, powerful placed shots, not so good technique, mean placement? I was thinking 70% power, lots of spin and placement. Right?

  Your strategy sounds good from what you've given me. A player with a short swing, low tension and power usually produces many unforced errors...but maybe you're playing a unicorn. Try and hit with more height, spin and depth to get them off the baseline which should expose their bad technique.

I stumbled upon this fantastic video and analysis of how Arthur Ashe beat Jimmy Connors in the 1975 Wimbledon final by essentially adopting the strategy of being a pusher. Hi Brady!
I got a pusher against me, who would constantly feed me with slice and drop shots, & I end up as you brought out getting frustrated just to find my shots rebound with literally zero pace. I can hit very powerful forehand and decent single handed backhands if about 1-2m behind the baseline, but this guy would get me to the service line by his shots and make me do unforced errors. How to deal?

Hey Brady. My recent experience is in the local league match, where I met person who was able to beat even a former pro 6:0 6:0 by pushing (with a ton of luck during his perfect day.... but anyway!). All I was able to do against him was one single game 40:0 before he adapted onto my serve. I have strong serve, and apart of direct aces, he mishit the only one return in whole match. He also did single one unforced error. And he gave me zero winners in whole match.

I lost 1:6 0:6 anyway. It was a long match, and everytime I played a smaller shots just with accuracy... I lost a rally "automatically", eventually. When I pushed, I sometimes won the rally, but I have to admit, chances here was not on my side either. His way of returning the balls was relatively slow, but taken from baseline, often on the rise, and very low above the net so there was almost always minimal jump and he never gave me too much extra time anywhere.

Not sure if there is any other hint available for me then: train, train, train more :). But if you do have, comeon with it :))).

PS: I do over play pushers usually.... but not this one. I have no idea what gameplan to try next time.

What I've noticed about this type of player is that the more I run them around, the more consistent they are. If I hit medium paced balls down the middle, the error count increases. Another point of interest, is that they are not comfortable hitting more than three balls in any given rally.
