overwatch 2 poor game design and terrible monetization rant. this game is still great in small bursts, but the current trajectory of the game will not last, something needs to change. over priced skins, predatory monetization practises, poor battle pass... players are not stupid, they won't keep taking this...will season 6 be that change?

Battle passes are so predatory with people’s time it’s honestly taxing. When every game you’re playing has a battle pass and makes you feel like you’re missing out, it makes me not want to play it at all. People 18 and over don’t have time to be playing 24/7.

Only way I would ever pay for OW PVE was if it was all in an expansion.. Like a complete story line from start to finish... There is no way at all I´m paying for a 3 mission thing.. or a battle pass for that matter.. I would a thousand procent rather just pay for a full game right up front at got rid of all battlepass, shop, achievents nonsense. But ofc they could not get rid of ow1 if they charged for ow2 I guess.. So there´s that. But I just hate it... And I probably wouldn´t buy a full story line in ow2 now either way.. Because it was promised in ow2.. Which was a free to play... So just that shady lying or at least questionable way of doing business... + all the proven lying.. Ow is still one of my favourite games while playing so I would contribute if they had a business model that wasn´t shit. No way I´m paying for a game if they give it for free.. Just support a big giant just for fun? It´s not like you get 20 dollar fun for a skin.. I have hundreds of them since ow1 and would not pay 40 dollar for them if I lost all skins somehow. I like skins and it´s fun to mess around build your own setup of voicelines... But they do not add as much as they cost. In a really good free to play game if the cost is somewhat balanced to how big part of the game they take.. (like a dollar max for a skin) I might buy a few.. But I rather just have all of them in a one time fee.. like buying the actual game.

i think pve having to be paid for is fine, i dont see people crying about the money when it comes to skins in csgo or valorant, theyre 1000 times more expensive

The best advice for you is to stop watching and unsubscribe Sty, a 40 year’s old guy who play kids or young people videogames and milks money out of YouTube by ranting and clickbaiting for the past 3-4 years about the state of overwatch avging 100k or more views per video. Sty Ow is dead as you say so uninstall and stop releasing non stop videos about how dead OW is every day for the past 4 years, ngl is so annoying and hypocrite as you are making money out of the videos. Try new games or better try outdoor activities sometime.

Also the thing you said about ranked being bad because you need to win 5 games to show progress... I think it's not a matter of the rank system being bad, it's a case of the game being bad and frustrating.

I played CS:GO for a long time, and it got me hooked to play comp for a while, and I wanted to rank up. The thing is, the only feedback that game gave you about your rank was you either rank up or you derank. There was absolutely no info anywhere about it (I think the game does tell you when you are about to derank or rank up, but that's it).

And here I'm wondering, why do overwatch players need SO MANY incentives to keep playing the game? Why do they need so many eye candy and rewards? I played that game for so long expecting NOTHING in return but getting better, and I had so much fun doing it.

And there's your answer: FUN. Overwatch is not fun, it hasn't been for a long time. Getting a fun match is so difficult, and on top of that you have the balance making everything less and less fun. They take player expression away, and simplify any emerging mechanic to a point where it is no longer fun (just look at what they did to mercy). The game doesn't reward you intrinsically for doing well, there's plenty of roles and characters that depend on so much stuff outside of their control. So overwatch is not made to be a competitive game. But it's also not made to be a casual game, look at TF2. TF2 had a ranked mode, but it didn't last because the game was so inherently casual. But that's not a bad thing, there's SO MUCH wacky stuff in that game, you can always have a laugh and goof around. They allow so much player expression and the game only gets more fun the better you get at it, with high level tech and movement that can take hundreds of hours to master and it's intrinsically rewarding. Most of the high skill heroes in overwatch get gutted, because we can't have our tiktok moiras be outperformed by a good genji.

I am a believer of high skill characters being a bit stronger than an easier character just because you have to put in the time, and people will always make mistakes. You just need the easier characters to be viable, not the best. Look at the dive meta in the old days of pro overwatch, most of the matches were mirrors, but it was still very enjoyable to watch and play. It is a bit of a bad example, since the roster was badly balanced and basically no one could compare to the dive characters, but all we needed back then was for the alternatives to be viable depending on map and playstyle of the team. Not the best, but make it doable. Remember the pirate ship strats? They used subpar heroes and they made it work using the circumstances of the map and comp to highlight the strong aspects of those heroes.

In any case, the problem with Overwatch, far beyond what Activision does to it, is that the PVP is not fun. That's why people were so excited for PVE, they wanted something that would bring back the fun back to overwatch.

That Baywatch mercy skin is 37 Canadian$ for me including TAX. I earn on a strong currency, but my friend in Colombia & India earn 300-400$/m average... That mercy skin is literally 1/10th of their monthly livelihood. If Blizzard priced the skin at 10-15USD, they'd still make the same amount of money! Because turnover would be higher (more people would be buying it). Some would even buy 2-3 skins / season because of affordability. Blizzard is "gatekeeping" the game, by catering to the rich, and having the barrier of entry feel so high to new players / lower income players. Microsoft still hasn't actually acquired ActivisionBlizzard, so I'm hopeful goblin Bobby and the other exes would be dethroned in time and Microsoft's leadership brings much needed change.
