- One man is responsible for saving his island home and turning it from desert to green space.
- Jadav 'Molai' Payeng began planting seeds on Majuli, an Indian island decimated by erosion, in 1979.
- By the time his work was noticed, in 2009, he’d planted a forest larger than Central Park.
- Payeng's efforts started at 16 when he discovered snakes washing ashore during monsoon season.
- Erosion along a sandbar on the Brahmaputra River had destroyed the vegetation wildlife needed for cover.
- So how did one man single-handedly turn a barren wasteland into an oasis now called the Molai Woods?
- Armed with knowledge he gained from his job as a forestry worker, Payeng began planting thousands of trees.
- Not only is Majuli thriving, giving hope to its 150,000 residents, but a new ecosystem has taken root.
- A herd of 110 Indian elephants now call Molai Woods home, as do tigers, birds, apes and other creatures.
- Payeng’s original goal was to plant 1,236 acres' (500 hectares’) worth of trees. He accomplished that in five years.
- Now in his 50s, Payeng-known to many as the Forest Man-isn’t slowing down.
- He’s working on planting 5,000 acres (2,023 hectares)
of trees on a nearby sandbar in desperate need of help."
