To get it out of the way, this falls under the category of visual novel (sound novel to be precise), so this isnt a traditional game as most think of them.
Its more like a choose-your-own-adventure book with added visuals and sound, you read a lot of establishing text and then can choose what to make a character do at certain points.
If that doesnt sound appealing, you probably wont enjoy this and should spend your hard-earned money elsewhere. What sets 428 apart from other games in the genre is that youre following the exploits of several characters.
Kano, a rookie detective working a kidnapping case. Achi, a street punk with a heart of gold who finds himself on the run with the twin sister of the kidnapped girl.
Minorikawa, a loudmouthed and abrasive freelance journalist. Tama, an amnesiac young woman stuck in a faulty cat costume. And Osawa, a world-renowned virology expert and father to the two girls involved in the kidnapping case.
The tone of the writing even differs between each character, with Osawas parts being written like an unnerving thriller, Kanos appearing to be more action thriller/police procedural, and Tama being slapstick and general goofiness.
Returning to the bit about choices, decisions that you make with one character will impact others, sometimes in roundabout or farfetched ways.
Having one character try to hail a taxi rather than walk will delay a second character, which means they miss an important meeting and get a Bad End.
You can switch to another characters timeline at any point, and you WILL be jumping all over the place trying to figure things out. There are 85 bad ends spread out over the course of the game, but most of them come with hints that let you know what went wrong.
Your goal is to make the correct choices to get everyone through the hour and into the next, and as you progress just how everyone is tied to the overarching story comes together beautifully.
There were a lot of twists and surprises, so I suggest going in blind and not even using a guide unless youre well and truly stuck. Even after you finish the game, theres still a lot of bonus scenarios and extra stories to read.
I initially beat the game after 21 hours and 5 minutes, but it took me 30 to unlock everything.
And while I was kinda on the fence about the live action photos (anime characters are more typical for visual novels), I think it worked really well and is another point for the uniqueness of 428.
With as much as I love 428, there are still downsides. The biggest is that it lacks good options for fast forwarding through dialogue.
You can hold down the X button to make text scroll a smidge faster, but thats annoying and most times when I was just trying to get through some scenes to get all the bad endings I just ended up turning on autoplay and splitting my attention with something else.
Lacking proper FF and text speed options is kind of unforgivable for a modern VN (even if it is a port of a 10 year old game, options and modern conveniences can and should be added IMO).
I also experienced about 3 crashes while I played, but the game auto-saves so often I didnt lose significant progress. These annoyances might bring me down to a 4.5, but Amazon doesnt use half stars so whatever, shut up and take my 5 stars.
I had a blast, and Im really glad this game finally got an English release. If you like VNs or the idea intrigues you, please give this a try.
I do not like visual novels first off. This game is somewhat of a visual novel but not really, it has similar elements but it a little more involved. The pacing starts slow but...
