Heavy Metal Gamer: Fire Pro Wrestling Combination Tag Review

I have reviewed WWF wrestling games in the past, but I feel that the Fire Pro Wrestling series doesn't get any love anymore, of course there hasn't been a game since the PS2, but the games are still fun. So this time I check out Fire Pro Wrestling Combination Tag for the Turbografx 16. I hope you enjoy this review. Thanks for watching.

Used to play WWF a lot as a kid and teenager. My first game was Warzone, then Attitude, both for the N64. But stopped at some point 'cause the later games in the 360 and PS3 era didn't have the same quality anymore. But I do plan on getting WWE 2K14 some day. And to clarify, yes. You can download japanese games on the Wii virtual console. There aren't that many, but they're there. Only thing is, I don't think they come with translators. The point is to buy japanese ports in their original form. So everything will be japanese.

One thing I noticed about these wrestling games, is the controls are generally not great. The worst part about the controls are usually the lock on systems. They're just horrendous.

  Yeah, my first wrestling game I ever played was Wrestlemania the Arcade game in the Arcades.
  
  Yeah the lock on systems, and the controls in a lot of old wrestling games are just not very good.

  Translated games are made by the fans themselves, so the VC will not have them.
  +JCaesar It could be the the lock-on system is set to automatic instead of manual in the options menu. I had to change that in some of the WWE wrestling games on the PS2. I agree...automatic lock-on system sucks.
  As for older games, they don't have lock-on systems because it wasn't until the 3D era of wrestling games that lock-on systems were added. Not even Fire Pro Wrestling Returns for the PS2 has a lock-on system.

  +316whatupz Even when setting lock on to manual, it was still horrible. It can't make up it's mind if it wants to toggle targets, or target whoever's close to you. And apart from that, sometimes tagging your partner is a bitch. They really need to improve controls for wrestling games. lol

  Yeah, I guess you are right about that. The worst is when you accidentally attack the ref and get DQ'd. Hate it when that happens. Pretty much ruins the match. :/

The one for the Super Nintendo is the best wrestling game for the SNES that I have ever played. It takes a shit on the old school WWF games. Hogan & the Undertaker on it too.
This game looks pretty cool too. Didn't know that the FPW series is on the Turbo-Grafx 16. Great review.

Nice review, I love this series. You might also consider trying FPW Blazing Tornado on the Saturn, different from the rest of the series but still really fun.

The Fire Pro Wrestling games are decent games indeed, I've played the roms over the years, but I have to say one of my all time favorite old school wrestling games still has to be Pro Wrestling on the NES, as I played it for hours with my brothers as a kid, and it was one of the earliest NES games that we had gotten for our NES. Also yes there are some Japanese import games on the Wii Virtual Console, but not a ton of them if I remember correctly, as I've not bought many VC games as I have a hacked Wii that can run emulators with ROMS.
