Does Hearthstone have a burnout problem?

I took a moment on stream to share my thoughts on Trump pulling back from Hearthstone and some of the game's systems that prevent other folks from doing the same.

I missed United in Stormwind, and the mini-set. So no Smite, missing a lot of the quests (which I hate anyway lol). However, that really limits the decks I can run.
Yes the argument is a F2P can get to legend... as long as they don't nerf the one deck they can play. Plus playing one deck all night/week/month is sooooo boring.
I enjoy watching streamers and copying their deck... however, I'm usually short a few key pieces , the legendary cards.

I really hope they fix player options. Dusting system sucks. I'm once again feeling I should just stay gone lol. Keep fighting the good fight Regis.

Mr Regis, your choice of words is all that I feel and I want to say about the game I used to love, Hearthstone. Now, there is that big "I must" and, honestly, it sucks. It feels more of an obligation than an entertaining experience.

I deleted my Blizzard account back during the Blitzchung incident, mostly just as an excuse to break myself out of very toxic and expensive habits of playing the game when I wasn't enjoying it. Now, 2-3 years later, I'm still engaged with Hearthstone content through you and Kibler in my Youtube feed but can't play unless I start over from scratch. I'll just say from my perspective, the only thing that could ever get me back in to standard would be a monthly subscription plan to have temporary access to a full collection. I don't know if Blizz would ever go for that since I'm sure they make more from whales dropping $500 on packs every expansion but I can always dream.

I feel like a lot of what's going on with what you're mentioning in the third part of the video is sunk lost fallacy. People are heavily invested financially or stat important and they're always trying to chase that moment of "remember x expansion that was so much fun Man I want to relive that moment". Because of that it's causing people to be upset with the game because they're putting expectations into something that may never come back. I don't know that's my two cents on it. It sucks that Trump is taking a bigger step back than he already was I love the guy I love a lot of the content creators but I understand that sometimes if there's an opening to get out, you run and don't look back. I wish the best for him and many others.

I don't think it's much of a "crap on it on my way out mentality" as more of true facts. The game isn't really captivating when compared to better games on the market. Plus, it's lost almost all of its appeal to people who play for strategy or f2p players. It's really just a mess and the code of the game itself exemplifies it perfectly. Sadly, the game is dying and there isn't much the devs can do. They've pretty much maxed out on the possibilities of making content more fun. Plus, they've prioritized stuff that pays off in the short term but hurts the game in the long run like unnecessary and convoluted key words, rng up the ass, and diamond cards that are purely for show.

There are too many broken/unbalanced cards that blizzard refuses to acknowledge as unbalanced and not fun. That's a big burnout factor for me. If I felt good playing the game and things felt balanced, I would be playing a lot more.

Really well structured and thought out video Regis! For me, I definitely understand that "obligation" sense of gameplay, and it's something I've accepted since WoW introduced daily quests. For me, I've made a conscious effort to diversify how I play Hearthstone, splitting my time between standard (always trying to at least get Diamond 5 to earn rewards, and then seeing if I have the patience/masochism to find and play a deck to legend), BGs and Mercs. For the latter I've taken a strict PvE F2P approach and will engage on tasks each day, and sometimes farm bounties if I have some spare time where I might be interrupted.

I think the last couple of years of metas have lent themselves too easily to "broken" decks or decks that are too linear (honestly of all the classes that I'm most done with, face hunter has just been so consistent this year!), and when the mini-sets come in and don't shake up the meta as much short term (in contrast to community expectations), then it leads to an element of groundhog day/week/month/year.

I don't think the problem is limited to Hearthstone though, like you say it's an industry practice to measure engagement and scratch the itch, but not everyone has been around the block enough to understand that "just" doing enough to hit 100 levels on the reward track or whatever is fine. FOMO is real, but once you realise there's nothing to actually fear (because they're just bytes and data at the end of the day) then it's easy to make that cut.

I don't think it'll happen to me (yet) because I'm casual enough to have other interests around Hearthstone, and it effectively acts as my filler during the day, but living and breathing the same game with a (somewhat) limited ruleset is bound to cause burnout faster than more complex games where there can be a lot more going on minute to minute and it's harder to "solve".
